What is Ocular Trauma?
As with all areas of the body, the eye can be subject to trauma. There are many different forms of trauma, varying in severity from minor injury to medical emergencies. Even in cases where trauma may seem minor, every eye injury should receive appropriate medical attention.

Symptoms
Symptoms of ocular trauma may include, but are not limited to:
- Pain or discomfort
- Redness, excessive watering
- Bleeding, swelling
- Reduced vision or loss of vision
- Eyelid injuries
- Blood in the clear part of the eye
- Unusual pupil size or shape
Ocular Trauma Types
Common types of ocular trauma may include:
- Blunt Trauma – e.g. car airbag, tennis ball, champagne cork, wood, closed fist etc.
- Foreign Body where a foreign material enters the eye – e.g. metal, chemicals, glass, plastic, tree branch etc.
- Penetrating eye injury
- Globe rupture
- Chemical or thermal burn to the eye

Ocular trauma requires immediate medical attention. Please contact our rooms on (07) 3555 5960 for advice. In some instances, we may ask you to present to your nearest emergency department first for initial investigations such as CT scan and commencement of antibiotics.
