Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon
Dr James Sax is an Associate Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at Queensland Eye & Retina Specialists, specialising in medical and surgical diseases of the retina. His areas of interest include retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, retinal vascular disease, complex cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. He has extensive experience with scleral-fixated IOL surgery including both the Yamane and sutured fixation techniques. He also provides a comprehensive eye care service - including uveitis, cataracts, general ophthalmology and ocular trauma.
Dr Sax grew up in Brisbane, and completed his undergraduate Bachelor of Psychological Science before pursuing a career in medicine through the University of Queensland.
Dr Sax undertook his specialist ophthalmology training in Queensland at major hospitals in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Townsville. After completing his core ophthalmology training, he completed a year as the Vitreoretinal Fellow at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Dr Sax then travelled to the United Kingdom and completed further Vitreoretinal training at the University of Southampton General Hospital. He was awarded the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Topham Scholarship in recognition of his ongoing training.
Dr Sax currently works as a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, Queensland Children’s Hospital, Mater Public Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital. Dr Sax is passionate about teaching and is committed to providing the highest quality training possible to the next generation of doctors, eye surgeons and ophthalmic allied health professionals in Queensland. In his spare time Dr Sax enjoys cycling and bush walking, and most importantly spending time with his wife, children and their two dogs.
